Q: I have relatives visiting. Can they stay in their RV in front of our house?
A: City code does not allow occupancy of RVs except in approved mobile home/RV parks. It is a serious violation to have a power cord run from the house to any camper, motor home or trailer.

Q: My neighbor has a boat and trailer parked in the driveway. Is this allowed?
A: As long as the vehicles have current registration, are in operable condition (no flat tires, broken windows, etc) and parked on an approved parking surface, there is no code preventing the parking of these vehicles in the driveway.

Q: Can commercial trucks and/or trailers park in a residential neighborhood?
A: Motor vehicles used for commercial or industrial purposes and rated more than one (1) ton capacity cannot park in residential areas as per Citrus Heights Zoning Code section 301-42.1.

Q: I want to add to my existing driveway (or add a second driveway) by removing a side lawn. Do I need to notify anyone?
A: There are codes restricting both the amount of driveway width allowed per residence (35 feet maximum for single family and duplex residential) and how a driveway ties in or encroaches onto the public right-of-way (the sidewalk). The Public Works Department should be contacted at (209) 845-3600 for an encroachment permit if the existing sidewalk will be part of the driveway. If a second driveway is being considered, the Planning Division should be contacted at (209) 845-3625.

Q: What is an approved parking surface?
A: Acceptable parking surfaces include cement, asphalt, decomposed granite, inlaid brick or stone, or parking strips composed of the above mentioned materials. All parking surfaces must also meet the standards set forth in section 36 of the Oakdale Muncipal Code and be maintained free of weeds and debris.

Q: When do I need a building permit?
A: Permits are necessary for any work that physically changes or adds to your property including:
  • Building a house or other structures
  • Additions or alterations to your existing home
  • Moving or demolishing a building
  • Interior demo for residential or commercial buildings
  • re-roofing your home or other buildings
  • Installation of a wood burning stove or fireplace
  • Adding a swimming pool
  • Fences over six feet in height
  • Patio/carport covers
  • Decks over thirty inches off the ground or attached to a house
  • Retaining walls
  • New plumbing (gas and water lines)
  • Replacement of water heaters
  • Replacement of heating and air conditioning equipment
  • All electrical, mechanical and/or plumbing alterations/improvements

Q: What work does not require a building permit?
A: Visit our Work Exempt from a Building Permit page to see a list of work which does not require a permit.

Q: How much do building permits cost?
A: Permit costs are based on the valuation of the work. The minimum cost for permit is $67, which includes one inspection. The Building and Safety Division has fee schedules available for reroofs, plumbing, electrical and mechanical work.

Q: Do all permits require plan review?
A: Not all permits require plan review.  Most reroof, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits are issued over-the-counter. Structural modifications, commercial tenant improvements and other more involved projects do require plan review.

Q: How many sets of plans are needed?
A: We require four sets for most projects and five sets for all new commercial and new residential projects.
