The current shelter building was built in the 1960’s with 10 dog kennels when the population of Oakdale was less than 5,000 people. A small addition was built in the early 1980’s when the population was 8,500. Three indoor quarantine dog kennels and 5 overflow outside dog kennels were added. Since then, the population of Oakdale has more than doubled to approximately 19,000. The shelter facility and number of kennels for dogs and cats has remained the same for more than 25 years. Incoming animals to the shelter for this year will total over 1,500, an increase of 10% over 2007 due to increased population and expansion of the City limits. ibly Northern California. Dogs are walked daily and taught basic manners by volunteers, which helps make them more adoptable. Volunteers create and put up 70 posters of shelter animals weekly. Pets are also listed on the Internet with Petfinder.org which also help increase adoptions. Volunteers hold adoptions during Oakdale Farmers Market during the summer, and do monthly Adoption Days at Oakdale Feed & Seed, Oakdale Pet Station, and The Tractor Supply Store.
