The on duty paid career firefighters work a 56-hour work schedule. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) time was negotiated to be paid a flat fee per month for those hours in excess of 52 hours. The current work schedule has each shift working 48 hours consecutive with 96 hours off duty. The 56-hour workweek is an industry standard. The 48-hour schedule is somewhat new, gaining popularity in the industry. A calendar is attached to reference the rotation of the three shifts for the year. We have also provided an organizational chart that reflects who is assigned to the shifts and what station they are assigned too. Station assignments are assigned using a bidding system that allows for the employee to bid for which station they wish to work at. The Fire Chief has the ability to make assignments over and above the bidding system. The labor group MOU has a minimum 2-hour overtime pay for all callbacks. The MOU establishes a minimum staffing of three personnel on duty at all times. On all reported vehicle accidents with injuries, structure fires, rescues, Mutual or Automatic Aid to outside agencies, all off duty paid personnel are paged and encouraged to return to work to staff additional resources and provide station coverage. The labor group has agreeded to a temporary staffing change of two firefighters at Fire Station 2 until the City can increase staffing levels to maintain 3 personnel at station two. Which means we keep a minimum staffing of three personnel at station one and two personnel at station 2.
