The property is kept and maintained for a period of time. Usually not longer then the time it takes to settle a case in court. The guidelines for releasing property are determined by State law. There are some exceptions: 1) the defendant does appear for court and a warrant is issued for his/her arrest, 2) there is civil case associated with the criminal case, 3) the defendant appeals the decision of the court. The appeal time on a case is 60 days after the courts verdict. The defendant has 60 days to file an appeal with the court before the verdict is final.

Found property is held for 90 days before the law allows the police department to destroy the property. The best way to get your property returned to you if it is stolen or misplaced is to engrave your name and drivers license or state identification number on the property. Another way to claim your property is to have proof of ownership, like having a sales receipt with the serial number on it.

Safekeeping has a maximum hold time of 60 days, however in some cases the safekeeping property may be returned within 72 hours. It all depends on the reason for the property being taken for safekeeping.
